Many car interior lighting kits are offered with either USB power or a 12V car-power connection. Neither is automatically better: the right choice depends on your vehicle, the product and how you want to use it.
When USB makes sense
USB-powered lighting is appealing when your car already has an accessible USB outlet or you have a suitable approved adapter. It can be convenient for smaller accent lights and simple interior setups.

When a 12V connection makes sense
A 12V accessory socket can be useful when a lighting kit is specifically designed for that connection. Our music-sync RGB interior lights, for example, include variants for USB and 12V car power, so the decision can be based on the connection available in your cabin.
Check the exact variant
Do not assume every version of the same product uses the same power source. Read the variant name carefully before ordering. A 5V USB version and a 12V car-power version may look similar on the page but are intended for different connections.
Plan cable routing
The best power option is also the one that lets you keep cables tidy and away from pedals, steering components and moving seat mechanisms. A convenient power socket on the opposite side of the cabin may be less useful if it creates an awkward cable route.
Avoid improvised electrical changes
If a setup would require hardwiring or changes to the vehicle's electrical system, use appropriately qualified help rather than improvising connections. This guide is about choosing plug-in power options, not modifying vehicle wiring.
